Walking Book Design

AGC / Book Design / 2024
[Objective]

The objective of the project was to design a non-fiction booklet based on the essay Walking by Henry David Thoreau. The focus was on the small and subtle details that contribute to an enjoyable long-form reading experience. The goal was to combine seamless typesetting with visual cues, such as images or ornaments, to reflect the character of the writing.
[Typeface Exploration]

I experimented with multiple typefaces, but came to the unconventional choice to use Arial. Within the design community, Arial is often dismissed for its overly simple, utilitarian aesthetic. However, through my research into both the typeface and the writings of Henry David Thoreau, I discovered a meaningful parallel.

[Graphic Exploration]
My interpretation of Henry Thoreau’s Walking included a journey through nature. I utilized The Smithsonian Museum’s collection of flora and transposed them into photoshop, then adjusted the contrast and transparency to impose them into my booklet.
